Saline Social Services - SMS Food Drive
Each year, our school hosts a food drive for the Saline Social Services organization. The students at Heritage School and Saline Middle School have been very generous over the years.
Every year Mr. Foster has made a wager with students: Meet your goal and Mr. Foster will shave his head! So far, all the classes have met the goal set by Mr. Foster, resulting in some lost hair.
In 2008, our team of 61 students brought in 1,669 cans. Matthew B. and Jake K. got to take a hack at Mr. Foster's hair.
In 2009, our team of 58 students brought in 1,287 cans! This was done with very short notice. Annie F. brought in 301 cans on her own and won the individual contest, and the opportunity to shave Mr. Foster's head.
In 2011, our team of 59 students brought in 2,041 cans! This is a new record! Cloe W. brought in 387 on her own and won the opportunity to shave Mr. Foster's head.
In 2012, our team fell short of the 1,200 item goal needed for the head shave. This was the first time a team has fell short. However, we all know what matters, and that's the donations that end up at Saline Social Services. Our team tallied over 900 items - a big feat! Kathryn W. brought in the most items with 205.
In 2013, our team reached our 1,200 item goal. As a team, we brought in 2,492, smashing the previous total item record set in 2011! Erik P. absolutely demolished the individual record by bringing in 818 items. Chloe I. wasn't too far behind, as she also broke the previous individual record. She brought in 662 items.
In 2014, our team reached the set 1,100 item goal. As a team, we brought in 1,649 items. Sophie S. brought in 905, which did beat the individual record! The previous record was 818, set in 2013 by Erik P.
In 2015, our team reached the set 1,000 item goal. As a team, we brought in 1,708 items. Cam C. brought in 226, while Jane M. and Dawson H. weren't too far behind.
Below is a slideshow that covers 2013-2015, and there's also some videos of some serious head shaving!
In 2016, unfortunately, Mr. Foster decided to end the head shaving bet for the following reasons:
1. He was afraid that one of these years, it wouldn't grow back.
2. His kids at home were tired of it.
3. That awkward stage of between shaved and grown back out was getting tiresome.
However, a bet was established that included some Halloween festivities, and in 2016, just our team alone brought in over 1,500 items! Matthew W. and Riley B. brought in the most items.
In 2017, new records were established! Team Foster-Berger brought in a total of 3,314 items! A new record! Also, Luke and Caleb H. teamed up and brought in over 1,000 items! A Tower of Ramen was established, and see below!
2018 brought a lot of donated items as well. The team brought in a total of 2,307 items, and Carlos S. Ryan F., Maya S., and Chase J. all brought in 200+ items. A Table of Ramen was built by all students (see below)!
In 2019, students were able to donate a whopping 1,200 items to Saline Social Services! Emerson J. was our leading donator with close to 300 items. Great work, team!
